Campground Comparison

The purpose of this page is to display a side by side comparison of the remaining campgrounds on the "short list", to try to give some "at a glance" data in order to assist us in picking one.

Notes:

The negative temperature (blue font) in the Elevation column shows the temperature of this campground, relative to Denver due to elevation. Due to a condition known as the lapse rate, the higher you get, the colder it gets. The temperature drops approximately 4 degrees F per 1,000 feet gained in altitude. This number shows how many degrees cooler this campground would be than the city of Denver. (For example, assuming the temperature in Denver is 80 degrees, you can expect Lake of the Rockies to be 75° and Lone Duck to be 71°)
The July Temps column shows the average high and low temperatures from approximately July 10 through July 31, as recorded at the Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs. (This weather station is the primary station for all four campgrounds.) However, I adjusted the temps for the lapse rate. Since Lake of the Rockies is at the same elevation as the weather station, its temps are unadjusted, but the other three show lower temps due to being higher than the station. This should give us a decent idea of what kinds of high and low temps to expect for each campground. I didn't bother to put precipitation data in the chart since it would be the same for each campground. (Just for reference, the odds of there being at least one rain day during July 10-31 is 22%.)
