unknown | I recently purchased a truck which makes a roaring noise above 65mph. It has been in various shops for quite some time and no one can figure it out. Things which have been checked/replaced include: Harmonic balancer Torque converter The bushing at the rear of the transmission(whatever it is) Both driveshaft yokes Driveshaft(actually replaced twice) Differential Rear axle bearings All tires and alignment Motor & transmission mounts The truck doesn't do this on a lift with the driveshaft out, but does when it is put back in. Is it possible that some slight imperfection in the rear pinion or drive shaft could have gotten past them? Any input would be GREATLY appreciated. Also, why won't chrystler let you talk to anyone but a dealer or a customer service rep who only tells you to talk to a dealer? I have a phone # for Technical Support, but I need a dealer code. |

22000 | Problem: Ticking noise when engine is idling. Seems to fade upon heavy accelleration. At first I thought it was lifters. All fluid levels are fine. Someone suggested fuel injector problems. 11000 | Truck set for about a month, when i started it the lifters tapped as if there was no oil in it and oil pressure did not register at all. check engine lite stayed on. Vehicle towed to Brandon Dodge Tampa FL. Dealer could not pull any code from computer and they said the converter was the tapping noise i heard. they changed the converter, ruining the muffler in the prosess. I later discovered that the mopar oil filters were junk and started using fram and castor 10-40 oil never incured this ever again and the truck sits most of the time, also after hearing a wineing noise in the transmission they said they rebuilt it? I checked only to discover there was no wrench marks on any of the bolts on the starter, bell housing, nor on the transmission pan. I rebuilt it myself figuring the warrenty that came with it I had toilet paper to wipe my ass with. From that day on i discovered that i still like my dodge dakota sport and she will never see any dealership half assed backyard shade tree so called mechanics I should have turned them into Chrysler Corp. |

I called the dealer and they said that they are aware of it, but they don't have an answer for it or a fix. The truck now has 23,000 mi. and the brakes have a shudder, I think the rotors are warped. I don't understand why this could be? because I've never abused the brakes. |
5000 | At about 5,000 mi. I began having this cuious problem with the throttle at highway speeds. When I slightly press the throttle I don't get any reaction, and then all of a sudden it kicks in. It's about a second to a second and a half span of no response. |

3800 | At about 3800 miles, tranny started leaking. took to local dodge dealer and they replaced rear seal. Halfway home from dealer, tranny started leaking again. Took back to dealer next day and they said the yoke was damaged and that's what damaged the seal. They ordered a yoke and seal this time. Took about a week to get parts, but since they entered my truck into their database wrong got wrong part. In process of tearing into tranny to replace yoke(before they realized it was wrong part) noticed all clutches were burnt up from driving without fluid. Finally decided to replace whole tranny, and has been running good since. |

20000 | AT 20K MILES THERMOSTAT HOUSING WAS LEAKING EVERYWHERE....NOW AT 23K MILES AND HAVE HAD TIERODS REPLACED...AND NOW THE BALL JOINTS(WHICH ARE PART OF THE CONTROL ARM) HAVE FAILED. HAVE HAD THE TRUCK TO LOCAL DEALER TWICE IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS FOR CONTROL ARM REPLACEMENT BUT BOTH TIMES THEY TOLD ME THE NEW ARMS WERE AS BAD AS THE ONES ON THE TRUCK NOW. DEALER HAS ORDERED TWO MORE PAIRS OF ARMS IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET A GOOD PAIR. THE SERVICE MANAGER IS TELLING ME DAKOTAS AND DURANGOS ARE BOTH EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM,,I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE BY FAR. DEALER TELLS ME THERE IS NO KNOWN REPAIR FOR THIS PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT EVEN IF DEALER CAN GET TWO NEW GOOD ARMS I WILL DEFINETLY BE BACK WITHIN A YEARS TIME OR SOONER TO GET THEM REPLACED AGAIN. I TOLD MANAGER I APRECCIATE HIS HONESTY BUT HE HAS DEFINETLY CONVINCED ME NOT TO OWN THIS PIECE OF CRAP WHEN IT'S OUT OF WTY. THIS TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN USED FOR PLOWING, TOWING, OR ANY TYPE OF COMMERCIAL USE. HAVE HAD DEALER ALSO LOOK AT A NOISE THAT I HAVE IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. 0 | Well, the most prominent problem is the pinging (any octane gas). When it was brand-new, it only did it under heavy load (towing uphill). But after it hit 2000 miles, I hear it anytime I'm moderately acclerating (but does NOT do it at WOT). The dealer here claims they can't hear it, but will not go on a test drive with me either! I also have a paint problem I wont deal with until summer - too much paint was applied on the driver's door, and on the "rocker" panels behind the passenger rear tire. This is most noticed after its been washed and waxed (Intense blue paint), at first I thought they were water runs (missed some water w/ the chamois or something) but turned out to be paint runs!! Also on the pass. door, there's some dust embedded in the paint. |

14000 | It emits a sulfur smell from the Catalytic Converter (noticed recently 14,000 miles) - has yet to be looked at by the dealer. |
14500 | The front rotors were resurfaced due to warpage. Despite the problems I've had with this truck - I still think its superior to the Toyota and Chevy turds I've had in the past, now if only the dealer can solve the above problems! I think it may be u-joints or front bearings it is very hard to tell. took it to the dealer at 10000 miles and the service manager said it was not an abnormal noise. he treid to blame it on the flowmaster i had installed and told him that was impossible. no way possible that the exhaust could make that noise from the fronmt end. he told me to come back and take a technician for a drive. i work full time and got to school full time, i dont have the time to mess with this. i am very dissatisfied with the service from fresno dodge. if they wont give me the time of day, why did i get the extended warranty. somebody please email me if they have any idea what this could be or if they are experiencing this problem. |

0 | I ordered my truck direct from my local dealer - I picked it up after it sat on the lot for 3 days. At delivery - paint on tailgate and rear fenders was all scratched / hazy from some type of cover that rubbed / made contact with paint. At delivery, power steering fluid was WELL below the ADD line when warm. - Noticed after I test drove truck. Truck died once with 45 miles on odometer - has not since repeated. At 2000 RPM, I experience a vibration / harmonic noise, appears to be nothing more than an annoyance so far - it has done this since I first test drove it with 0 miles to present, 700 miles. I've noticed that when I put the truck into park from drive, it has a tendency to clunk into park and sort of lurch backward, like it's releasing the suspension energy. Interior came with what the dealer is calling factory "grease" stains. They will try to clean the interior up when they fix / repaint the tailgate and fenders. Windshield wiper is also mal-aligned. The passenger wiper is cockeyed about 7-10 degrees up, I will probably just fix this myself. I know that I have to allow the engine to fully wear in before I can get an accurate gas mileage reading, but right now, it's not anywhere near the 15-20 that the sticker advertised. I am curious if any other 4.7 owners are having poor mileage too. |

10 | I've had aproblem with the idle since I got the truck with 10 miles on it, But now I'm having it seen to.The idle problem I'm having is this - when the air or heat(middle knob is ON) is on, the idle will hang around 1000 rpm's when you mash the clutch in and you're moving. When the middle knob is in the off position, the idle will fluctuate greatly when the clutch is mashed in(between 400&900rpm's). When you come to a complete stop with the clutch mashed in,the idle likes to hunt around about 3 times going from about 350 to 700 rpm's and settling at 600.When the motor hits 350-400 rpm's, it shakes pretty good and feels like it's going to die.Right now, Dodge is trying to blame this problem on winter gas mixes in the warmer southern states, but I think that they just don't know what the problem is and don't want to say it.The percentage of 4.7L owners having similar problems is overwhelming. I think this a is a serious problem and it concerns me greatly. |

Dealer and I know one another quite well by now so he canibalizes yet another trans. control module off another Dakota blames it on service manual hook-up error (Hmm I think the connectors are keyed) have not had any problems since (10000 miles). |

0 | Front end alignment off from factory. Passenger door hinges not fully attatched to body. 2 of 4 bolts were just started and not screwed in or tightened down. |
1400 | 1400 Miles - CV boot torn and wheel bearing blown front passanger wheel. Dealer stated it looked like transport damage (tied down using axle.) but you never know! (How does tying down to the axle blow your wheel bearing? I guess it's possible? The CV boot I could understand.) |
5000 | Water condensation found in Oil filler tube. No fix yet found as of 19 Jan 00. |
9000 | Rear Passenger brake - Shoe came unrivited from mounting bracket, gutting entire brake for that wheel. Replaced Pressure plate, drum, shoes, all internal mechanicals. |

0 | From day one the intermittent wipers did'nt work properly. @ 0 miles engine has had an annoying tapping noise. Dealer claims they have had many complaints on the 3.9L, however there was nothing they can do. Passenger side door has a paint run. On delivery I discovered a large hose disconnected in the engine compartment laying on the left exhaust manifold. It was a venting hose from the fuel tank that was supposed to be connected to the LDP (evap leak detection pump). |
740 | At 740 miles my 3.9L developed a loud knocking on engine startup and during warm-up. My dealer said it was "piston slap" (undersize or out off round piston). The dealer replaced all six pistons. problem is gone. What are the long term effects !!! needless to say im very upset. |

0 | Problem only occurs whe gas tank is between half full and full. After stopping a loud thump noise is heard and felt. It comes from the area of the fuel tank.Under half tank the noise is gone. Dealer replaced tank and talked with the factory. They say it is a design flaw in the tank, with no baffle in it. The float is hitting the top of the tank. They say it is normal and there is no fix. They say all Dakotas like mine do it. Hard to believe! Anyone have a simular problem? |
